Two adult Ospreys have built a new nest atop the traffic signal on Viera Boulevard at the northeast corner of Stadium Parkway. The nest, which contains chicks, was discovered on May 1, 2026. Osprey chicks reach near-adult weight in 30 days, according to experts. The birds, also known as 'fish hawks,' are commonly seen along Brevard County’s waterways but nesting on a traffic signal is unusual. The location is near the Viera Village area, a mix of residential and commercial development. Photos by Tim Shortt of Florida Today show the nest perched about 25 feet above the road. The signal is part of a busy intersection near the Viera Sports Complex. Local wildlife officials have not commented on the nest but note that Ospreys often return to the same nesting sites each year. The chicks are expected to fledge in late June. Drivers in the area have reported seeing the birds flying near the signal during the day. The nest is visible from several nearby homes and businesses. Ospreys are protected under federal law, and disturbing the nest could result in fines. The traffic signal has not been altered to accommodate the birds, and no plans are in place to remove the nest. The birds’ presence has drawn interest from residents and birdwatchers in the area.
