Cocoa Beach police and SWAT officers surrounded a retail plaza Monday after an incident at a kava bar led to one person being taken into custody. The incident occurred early Monday, June 22, near 625 N. Atlantic Ave., according to the Cocoa Beach Police Department. Officers blocked off the shopping plaza just north of the Cocoa Beach Library, with SWAT units seen at the scene and police cars from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office present. The Calm Collective Kava Bar, located in the plaza, is believed to be where the incident started. A Facebook post from the police department shortly after 10 a.m. urged the public to avoid the area while officers conducted their investigation. Officers were stationed in and around the Dollar General store’s parking area, which is adjacent to the plaza. Residents nearby said the sudden police presence caused confusion. One shopper described seeing officers in tactical gear and heard a brief commotion before the plaza was locked down.
