Northrop Grumman has opened a new aerospace engineering hub in Melbourne, Florida, marking the company's first major expansion in Brevard County since 2018. The 125,000-square-foot facility on Saturn Avenue will focus on advanced aircraft systems and defense technology, according to company officials. This move follows a $150 million investment announced last year to strengthen the Space Coast's aerospace sector. The building is expected to create 300 new jobs over the next three years. The facility will house teams working on next-generation unmanned aerial systems and satellite communication technologies. Northrop Grumman officials said the site will collaborate closely with nearby agencies like the Kennedy Space Center and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Local leaders highlighted the hub's potential to attract related businesses to the area. Mayor Buddy Dyer called the expansion a 'validation of Melbourne's growing reputation as a center for aerospace innovation.' The city has seen a 25% increase in aerospace-related jobs since 2020, according to Brevard County economic data. The new hub will share space with existing Northrop Grumman operations at the Melbourne International Airport, which already employ over 500 people. The facility will include specialized labs for testing materials under extreme conditions and a 3D printing center for rapid prototyping. Workers will be trained through partnerships with local community colleges. Northrop Grumman's vice president for the region, Maria Lopez, said the company chose Melbourne for its skilled workforce and proximity to launch sites. The expansion comes as Brevard County officials push to diversify the economy beyond tourism and space tourism. The county's aerospace sector generated $4.2 billion in economic activity in 2023, according to a recent report. The new hub is expected to contribute $120 million annually to the local economy once fully operational.
