The City of Melbourne has updated a nighttime lane closure on Pineda Causeway effective October 7. The closure affects the westbound lanes between the 21st Street and 27th Street intersections. Work is expected to continue through October 11, with crews operating between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. daily. Drivers are urged to plan alternate routes during these hours.
Pineda Causeway is a key link between Melbourne Beach and the mainland, carrying thousands of vehicles daily. The closure comes as part of ongoing infrastructure repairs aimed at addressing potholes and drainage issues. City officials said the work is necessary to prevent further damage to the roadway.
Local resident Maria Gonzalez said she often uses the causeway for commuting but has noticed increased delays. 'It’s frustrating when there’s no warning about closures,' she said. 'I wish they’d post signs earlier.'
The city has placed temporary signs along the route and shared updates via its website and social media. Emergency vehicles will have access at all times, according to city spokesman Mark Thompson. 'We’re trying to minimize disruption while keeping the work on schedule,' he said.
The closure is part of a larger $2.3 million project to resurface 1.5 miles of the causeway. Similar work is underway on nearby roads, including a lane shift on Ridge Road that began last month. City officials said the projects are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
