A new halfway house called 'Touch of Grey' has opened in Melbourne, Florida, providing a sanctuary for senior dogs who are often passed over by potential adopters. The facility, located at 1234 Pine Street, began operations on April 5, 2024, and is managed by the nonprofit organization Brevard Animal Rescue Alliance. The facility has space for 50 dogs and is already home to 20 animals rescued from overcrowded shelters. "We’re seeing a lot of senior dogs in need of love and care," said Sarah Mitchell, the organization’s executive director. "Many people don’t consider adopting older pets, but they make wonderful companions." The facility offers medical care, daily exercise, and adoption services. It also partners with local veterinarians to provide low-cost spaying and neutering. The cost to operate the facility is covered by donations and adoption fees, which range from $200 to $500. The facility has already received interest from several local families. "We’ve had calls from people who want to adopt," Mitchell said. "It’s heartening to see the community support." The Touch of Grey facility is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The organization plans to expand its services in the coming months, including a volunteer program and educational workshops on senior pet care.
