A healing garden aimed at supporting veterans in Brevard County has officially opened. Located on the grounds of the Brevard VA Medical Center in Cocoa, the garden is part of a $250,000 project funded by local donations and grants. The space includes walking paths, native plantings, and quiet seating areas intended to help veterans cope with stress and anxiety.
The garden was unveiled on April 5 during a ceremony attended by VA officials and local veterans. 'This is a place where veterans can find calm and connection,' said VA Regional Director Maria Lopez. 'We hope it becomes a regular part of their care.'
Veterans who have used the garden in its first week report feeling more relaxed, according to a VA staff member. The space is open to all veterans, their families, and caregivers. It is staffed by two full-time volunteers who provide basic support and guidance.
The project was led by the Brevard Veterans Alliance, a nonprofit group that has worked for three years to secure funding. 'We knew veterans needed something beyond traditional therapy,' said alliance co-founder James Carter. 'This garden is a step toward holistic care.'
The VA plans to expand the garden next year with additional features like a meditation pavilion and a memorial wall for fallen service members. The project has already sparked interest from other VA facilities across Florida.
