NASA teams at Kennedy Space Center are securing the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft for the Artemis II mission, with a potential launch date of April 1. The rocket arrived at Launch Pad 39B on March 20 and has since been connected to pad infrastructure for power and communication systems. Emergency egress baskets were attached to the mobile launcher, and the crew access arm was extended to allow access to the White Room, where astronauts will board the Orion spacecraft.

Technicians are currently performing pad-specific tests, including ordnance connectivity checks on the flight termination system and radio frequency testing for the core stage. These tests are part of a standard pre-launch protocol to ensure all systems function under lunar mission conditions. The Artemis II crew—three American astronauts and one Canadian—will spend 10 days in space, traveling to the moon’s far side before returning to Earth.

The mission marks the first crewed flight beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972. NASA officials have not confirmed a final launch date, but teams are working to meet the April 1 target. If successful, Artemis II will pave the way for future lunar landings, including the eventual goal of establishing a sustainable presence on the moon.

Kennedy Space Center workers have been preparing for the mission since late 2025, with simulations and training exercises conducted at the center’s astronaut training facilities.
