NASA and SpaceX launched a Dragon spacecraft toward the International Space Station on Friday the 13th, April 13, 2024, from Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The mission, part of SpaceX’s Commercial Resupply Services contract, carried 5,800 pounds of supplies, scientific equipment, and hardware for crewed spacewalks. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 3:45 p.m. EST, with the first stage landing successfully at Cape Canaveral’s Landing Zone 1.

The launch defied the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th, a date often associated with bad luck. SpaceX’s vice president of flight reliability, Hans Koenigsmann, said the team focused on the mission’s goals rather than the date. ‘We’ve launched on 13ths before,’ he said. ‘This one was no different.’ The Dragon spacecraft is expected to dock with the ISS on Saturday, April 14, after a 24-hour journey.

The payload included experiments for NASA’s Biological and Physical Sciences Division, including studies on plant growth in microgravity and materials science. The mission also carried a new set of lithium-ion batteries for the ISS’s power system, replacing older units. SpaceX’s spacecraft has completed 25 resupply missions since 2012, with a 100% success rate.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson praised the launch from the Kennedy Space Center’s Press Site. ‘This is a testament to the teamwork between NASA and SpaceX,’ he said. ‘Every mission gets us closer to our goal of sustainable exploration.’ The next SpaceX launch is scheduled for May 15, 2024, from the same launch site, carrying a crew of four astronauts for a six-month ISS mission.

Local residents in Brevard County watched the launch from viewing areas near the Space Coast. ‘It’s always exciting to see a rocket go up,’ said Mary Smith, a retiree from Titusville. ‘The 13th didn’t feel any different than any other day.’ The successful mission continues the partnership between NASA and SpaceX, which has become a cornerstone of U.S. space operations.
