NASA’s new space telescope is set to launch Sunday at 7:30 a.m. from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The Kennedy Space Center, located 35 miles north of Cape Canaveral, has hosted more than 150 launches since 1961, but this mission is the first to use SpaceX’s Falcon 9 for an astrophysics payload.
The telescope’s primary mirror, measuring 2.4 meters in diameter, will capture light from distant galaxies to help scientists understand the universe’s expansion. It will join other NASA observatories like Hubble and Webb in studying cosmic phenomena. The mission’s principal investigator, Dr. Jane Smith of the University of Arizona, said the telescope will provide “unique insights into the fundamental forces shaping the cosmos.”
