Bernie and Heather Guenther launched Mold K9 Detection Services in 2026, offering a new approach to a problem that affects thousands of Florida residents each year. Their work focuses on identifying mold growth behind walls, under flooring, and inside HVAC systems — areas that traditional inspections often miss.
The service relies on Arizona, a certified mold-detection dog trained by Bill Whitstine, a pioneer in the field. Arizona can detect the scent of active mold growth at concentrations as low as 0.1 parts per million. The dog’s ability to locate mold sources quickly saves homeowners time and money by avoiding unnecessary repairs. "We’ve found mold in places people never think to look," said Heather Guenther. "This method is faster and less destructive than traditional testing."
Mold K9 Detection Services operates primarily in Brevard County and Central Florida, but demand has grown rapidly since the company’s launch. The Guenthers say Florida’s humid climate makes mold a persistent issue, especially in older homes and commercial buildings. Their service has been used in residential properties, schools, and offices, with results confirmed by laboratory testing.
The company charges $350 per inspection, which includes a detailed report and recommendations for remediation. Bernie Guenther said the process typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the property. "We’re not replacing inspectors," he said. "We’re giving them a tool to do their job more efficiently."
The Guenthers plan to expand their team of detection dogs in the coming months. They are also working with local real estate agents and insurance companies to promote the service as a proactive measure for property owners. "Mold is a silent problem," Heather Guenther said. "Our dogs help make it visible before it becomes a health or financial crisis."
