Merritt Island High School senior DeShaun Thomas never played tight end before his freshman season. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound athlete spent his youth career on defense, playing linebacker and defensive end. He made his first start at tight end in his high school debut. 'I feel like I got my aggressiveness from that,' Thomas said. 'I never played tight end until I got to high school.'
Over three seasons, Thomas has become a key part of the Mustangs' offense. He has 90 receptions for 1,248 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. Last season, he had a team-high 41 catches for 570 yards and 5 touchdowns, adding 6 rushing touchdowns. 'I can do everything from running the ball to catching it, blocking, defense,' Thomas said. 'Pretty much everything but probably defensive back.'
Thomas credits his improvement to hard work. His 40-yard dash time has improved, and he says his body is developing. 'It’s really proving me like hard work and determination really pays off,' he said. His route running has also improved this season. 'Something that definitely took off this year as an improvement with my route running,' Thomas added.
Entering his senior season, Thomas is focused on his next step. 'I’m super grateful for what I have, but there’s more in me that people haven’t seen yet,' he said. 'With more hard work at the next level, I will start.' His goals include playing college football, but he hasn't decided on a position yet. 'I’m really proud seeing my 40 time go down,' Thomas said. 'I’m growing into my body more, my frame more.'
