Merritt Island High School will host a civic engagement assembly titled 'Your Vote Is Your Voice' on Monday, February 23, from 10:40 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. at the school’s campus located at 100 East Mustang Way in Merritt Island. The event aims to teach students about the importance of voting and their role in shaping local communities. Supervisor of Elections Tim Bobanic will lead the assembly, which is part of a broader effort to increase youth participation in elections.
Bobanic will discuss the voting process, registration deadlines, and the impact of civic engagement. A key component of the program is his 'Vote in Honor of a Veteran' initiative, which encourages participants to cast ballots in memory of those who served. The initiative has been promoted at previous events across Brevard County, including schools and community centers.
The assembly will include interactive elements, such as a live demonstration of how to register to vote and a Q&A session with Bobanic. School administrators said the event aligns with the district’s focus on civic education. 'We want students to understand that their voice matters,' said one administrator, who declined to be named. 'This is a chance to connect classroom learning with real-world action.'
The event is free and open to the public, though attendance is limited to students and staff due to space constraints. Bobanic’s appearance follows similar assemblies at other Brevard County schools this month. The Supervisor of Elections office reported a 12% increase in student voter registration in 2025 compared to the previous year.
