Merritt Island High School’s football team is targeting a state title this fall after advancing to the regional semifinals last season for the first time since 2021. The Mustangs finished 7-5 in 2025, a marked improvement from previous years, but head coach Tyler Murray said the team wants more. “We didn’t end where we wanted to end,” Murray said. “But it was a successful year. Now we want to take the next step.”
The Mustangs return a strong core of players and have added several transfers, creating a mix of experience and fresh talent. Murray said the team’s culture and work ethic have helped integrate new players smoothly. “Our best players are our hardest workers,” he said. “When that happens, everything else falls in line.”
Senior quarterback Kevin Verpaele and offensive players like Alain Adams, DeShaun Thomas, and transfers Zaylan Chapple and Elijah Mitchell are expected to drive the offense. Last season, Merritt Island averaged 32.4 points per game, among the best in Brevard County. “They’re going to be explosive,” Murray said. “I’m excited to watch those guys play.”
The team’s focus is on consistency and depth. Murray emphasized daily competition during summer workouts, noting the intensity of practices. “The kids are competing every day,” he said. “It’s intense, very physical. I think we’re going to be a pretty good team this year.”
With a blend of returning talent and new additions, Merritt Island is aiming to build on last season’s progress. The Mustangs open their 2026 campaign on Aug. 26 against Satellite High. Murray said the team’s goal is clear: “Make that deep run like we know we’re capable of doing.”
