Elijah Floyd, a senior at Merritt Island High School, is positioning himself as a key player in the team's bid for a state championship. The 6-foot, 180-pound linebacker and safety has spent his high school career at Rockledge, where he evolved from a freshman with 8 tackles to a standout with 55 tackles and 4 passes defensed in 2025. Floyd transferred to Merritt Island this season, joining a program he says has already embraced him as part of its family. "They welcomed me like I was already there since freshman year," Floyd said. "They’ll push you to your best ability of yourself. Everything over there is like a champion mindset." Floyd's versatility has been a hallmark of his career. He began at linebacker as a freshman before moving to safety during his sophomore year, a transition he credits with helping him develop into a more complete player. "My sophomore year was almost my first time ever playing the position," Floyd said. "I had a brilliant year. Last year was a good year too because it was my first year playing safety." At Rockledge, Floyd stepped into a leadership role as one of the oldest players on a young team. "I felt like I had to step up," he said. "Almost everybody at Rockledge were juniors, so I felt like I had to step up." Merritt Island coach Jeff Smith said Floyd's adaptability and work ethic make him a perfect fit for the team's defensive schemes. "He’s a guy who can play multiple positions and still make plays," Smith said. "He’s got the size and speed to impact games in different ways." Floyd remains undecided on his college future but says he’s focused on helping Merritt Island make a run at the state title. "I just have a great feeling about this ever since I went to Merritt Island," he said. "The transition was smooth. We’re ready to compete."
