Merritt Island’s football team delivered a decisive road win on Aug. 28, defeating Melbourne 35-7 in Week 2 action. The Mustangs built on their Week 1 momentum, executing a balanced offensive strategy that included five rushing touchdowns and explosive passing plays. "I think it was an overall team win," said Merritt Island head coach Tyler Murray. "We came out firing on all cylinders. They have a really good football team over there." Senior quarterback Kevin Verpaele led the charge, rushing for a career-high three touchdowns and throwing for two more. His performance marked a personal breakthrough after not scoring a touchdown in Week 1. "It felt awesome," Verpaele said. "I haven’t been in the end zone for a while, so it felt great." The offensive line, anchored by seniors Andrew Metcalf, Diego Alford, and Joey Sonnenberg, along with juniors Bryce Phillips and Antwann Smiley, provided crucial support.
