The Mustangs, seeded third, advanced to the final with a 4-1 win over Charlotte in the semifinals. The final against top-seeded Chiles was halted after the Timberwolves secured the dual with a sweep in the No. 1 pair.
The Mustangs' No. 2 pair of seniors Delaney Petit and junior Reece Loggins lost 2-0 to Chiles' Loganne Abernathy and Riley Warmath in the first session. In the No. 4 pair, Chiles' Riley Boykin and Callie Rowse defeated Merritt Island's Khloe Horton and Lydia Scott 2-0. Chiles sealed the victory in the No. 1 pair with Natalie Gibson and Meg Hearn defeating Bella Becker and Amber Ives 2-0. The Mustangs' No. 3 pair was Whitney Wisniewski and Peyton Riordan, while the No. 5 pair was Sadie McClellan and Gena Walters.
Despite the loss, Merritt Island's season was marked by milestones. The team earned its first-ever win at the FHSAA state tournament on Friday, improving to an FHSAA school record of 18 victories. The Mustangs' performance in Tallahassee highlighted their growth this season, though the championship slip remained a missed opportunity.
The match was played under the threat of inclement weather, which led to the early conclusion once the dual was decided. Merritt Island's coach noted the team's resilience throughout the tournament, calling the season a 'step forward' for the program.
