The Mustangs, who entered the game with an 18-7 record, scored three runs in the fourth inning but couldn't overcome the Scorpio's offensive output. Satellite, which improved to 17-7, secured the win despite allowing six runs. The game was part of a spring schedule matchup between the two Space Coast rivals.
Merritt Island's offense struggled early, managing just one hit in the first three innings. The Mustangs broke through in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits and a Satellite error. Senior pitcher Jake Thompson held the Scorpio to two earned runs over six innings, striking out five batters. Satellite's offense, led by junior outfielder Liam Carter, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, capitalized on Merritt Island mistakes in the second and fifth innings.
The loss marks Merritt Island's third defeat in their last five games. Head coach Mark Reynolds said after the game that his team's defensive lapses in the first half of the contest hurt their chances. 'We made some critical errors that we can't afford to make against a team of this caliber,' Reynolds said. Satellite's coach, David Morales, praised his team's resilience. 'We've been working on our hitting all spring, and it showed today,' Morales said.
The game drew a crowd of over 200 fans, many of whom were students from both schools. The rivalry between Merritt Island and Satellite has grown in recent years, with the two teams meeting twice this spring. The Mustangs will host Satellite again on April 12 at Merritt Island High School. Both teams are currently ranked in the top 10 in the Florida High School Baseball Poll.
