Melbourne High School's softball team defeated Lake Brantley 5-3 in a tightly contested Friday night game at Melbourne High School on March 6, 2026. The win, which came on the heels of a three-game losing streak, was highlighted by a two-run home run from junior Kamryn Potts in the bottom of the fifth inning. The shot, which cleared the left-field fence, gave the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.
The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Lake Brantley's Lauren Compton holding Melbourne to just two hits through the first four innings. But the Bulldogs' offense finally broke through in the fifth, fueled by a two-out double from Brookelynn Dolan and Potts' decisive home run. 'That was the moment we needed,' said Melbourne coach Sarah Mitchell. 'Kamryn's been working on her swing all season, and it finally paid off.'
Defensive plays also played a key role in the outcome. Ally Gomez made a diving catch in the third inning to snuff out a potential Lake Brantley rally, and Caylie Cote threw out a runner attempting to steal second in the sixth. The Bulldogs' pitching staff, led by Addison Balavender, held Lake Brantley to just three runs on six hits. Balavender struck out five batters in her five innings of work.
Lake Brantley, which entered the game ranked No. 8 in the state, struggled to find momentum after Potts' home run. The Eagles' only runs came on a solo home run by Sabrina Boyer in the second inning and a two-run double by Taylor Nguyen in the fourth. 'We just couldn't get the big hit when we needed it,' said Lake Brantley coach Mark Thompson. 'Melbourne played smarter, and they made the plays we couldn't.'
The win improves Melbourne's record to 6-7 on the season, while Lake Brantley falls to 9-4. The Bulldogs will host West Orange on Monday, looking to build on their momentum.
