Melbourne High School's softball team advanced to the Class 6A, Region 2 regional final with a 2-1 victory over Bloomingdale on May 14, 2026, after a rain-delayed semifinal game that was originally scheduled for May 13. The No. 2-seeded Bulldogs, hosting the No. 3-seeded Bulls, won the pitcher's duel in a game that lasted more than two hours due to a delayed start. Freshman pitcher Addison Balavender held Bloomingdale to one run on four hits while striking out seven batters in a complete-game performance.
The game was delayed 23 hours due to inclement weather on Tuesday, forcing the teams to play on Wednesday. Melbourne head coach Chris Cottrill said the Bulldogs faced challenges throughout the contest, including multiple scoring opportunities that were left uncapitalized. 'We had runners in scoring position multiple times and we kind of let ourselves in a tight game there the whole time,' Cottrill said. 'I’m just proud of them for executing when it mattered.'
Balavender, who said she felt 'really happy' with her performance, allowed singles in the first and second innings but stranded both runners. She then retired 12 of the next 13 batters before Bloomingdale tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning with an RBI sacrifice bunt. The Bulldogs responded with a defensive gem in the same inning, as first baseman Caylie Cote made a diving catch and tagged out Bloomingdale's Daelyn Johnson to end the frame.
Balavender closed out the game in the seventh inning with a pop out, fly out, and strikeout. 'Our defense, we’re really strong,' she said. 'I trust them completely.' The win marks the first time in her high school career that Balavender has helped her team advance to a regional final, setting up a showdown with the winner of the other semifinal game.
