Melbourne's 25th annual MelBOOM fireworks show will take place Saturday, July 4, from 3 to 10 p.m., with fireworks launching at 9 p.m. The event marks the Cook family's 58-year involvement in the tradition, which began with Calvin Cook in 1968. Bill Cook, who has led the show for 25 years, said the family's connection to fireworks started when his grandfather was inspired by Eau Gallie displays as a child. "It’s kind of in our blood now," Bill said. "I’m literally grandfathered in." The Cooks — Calvin, Steve, Tim, and Bill — have managed the Eau Gallie-Melbourne fireworks since 1968. "My grandfather Calvin Cook, my dad Steve Cook, my brother Tim Cook, Bill Cook myself, 58 years that we have shot the Eau Gallie Melbourne show," Bill said. The show now uses electronic programming instead of manual ignition, a shift Bill said made the event safer and more precise. The city expects 7,000 people to attend. "We love lighting up the sky for everybody," Bill said. "Hope they enjoy it." Gina Petreins of Melbourne's Parks and Recreation department said the show aims to "instill a sense of pride in being an American" on the Fourth of July. A surprise will be included in the fireworks display, with no need for spectators to leave their seats. The Cooks have not disclosed details of the surprise, but past shows have featured synchronized music and special effects. The event is free and open to the public, with viewing areas along the Melbourne Brevard County Line. The Cook family's legacy continues as the show enters its 25th year. "I want it to be the most special Fourth of July that anyone has ever attended here," Petreins said.
