Melbourne Orlando International Airport has received a $2.5 million grant that officials say will create 500 high-paying jobs and accelerate growth in Brevard County. The funding was announced this week by state and local leaders during a ceremony at the airport’s main terminal. The grant comes as the airport handles record passenger numbers, with 2023 traffic exceeding 3.2 million travelers. Airport director Karen Thompson said the money will fund infrastructure upgrades and staff expansion.
The grant is part of a state initiative to support regional airports. Legislators cited the airport’s role in connecting Central Florida to major hubs like Atlanta and Dallas. The funds will also support a new cargo facility expected to open in 2025. That project alone is projected to add 120 jobs in logistics and transportation.
Local business groups praised the investment. The Brevard Chamber of Commerce noted the airport has already attracted 20 new companies since 2022, including two aerospace firms. “This grant validates our workforce and infrastructure,” said chamber president Mark Reynolds. The airport’s employment office reported 85% of job applicants last year were from Brevard County.
The funding will also expand the airport’s role in space tourism. Officials confirmed plans to build a visitor center near the terminal by 2026, timed with increased commercial spaceflight activity. The airport currently hosts 15% of all space-related cargo in the U.S., according to federal data.
The grant includes $500,000 for workforce training programs. Community college leaders said partnerships with the airport have already placed 300 students in aviation and maintenance roles. The airport’s annual economic impact is estimated at $1.8 billion, according to a 2023 study by the University of Central Florida.
