Mariah Humphries and her 7-year-old daughter, Ava, are now living in a home on the Space Coast that was built using 3D-printing technology. The house, located in Melbourne, is the first of its kind in Florida and marks a new chapter for Humphries, who once lived homeless while pregnant. "This is the living room, and this is my kitchen," Humphries said during a tour of the home. "This is my bedroom." The home represents more than just a roof over her head. Just a few years ago, Humphries was living in the woods while seven months pregnant. "For me, it’s more of a safe space," she said. "I have a home. I don’t have to move. I don’t have to bounce. I don’t have to worry about tomorrow." Humphries entered New Life Mission’s program for homeless women and children in 2021. She worked full time, attended school, raised her daughter, and completed sweat-equity hours for Space Coast Habitat for Humanity, helping build homes for other families. "I decided to change the chain my family had," she said. "My dad was fine, my mom had some problems. I decided one day that I was not going to let my daughter go through the same thing." The 3D-printed home is part of an effort to explore affordable housing solutions. The structure was built using technology developed by a partner organization, though details about the specific technology were not provided. Humphries said the home gives her stability. "I now have a home that I can call my own," she said. The house is one of several projects Space Coast Habitat for Humanity is working on to address housing shortages in Brevard County. The organization has not yet announced plans for more 3D-printed homes, but officials said the project is part of a broader strategy to experiment with new construction methods. Humphries’ story has drawn attention from local leaders, who praised her resilience. "She’s an example of what can happen when people work together," said a spokesperson for Space Coast Habitat for Humanity. "Her journey shows the power of community support and personal determination."
