Melbourne High School's Clay MacConnell threw a complete-game shutout in the 6A District 7 championship on April 24, 2026, helping his team defeat Viera 6-0. The 6'4" junior right-hander allowed just three hits and struck out seven batters in six innings, maintaining a perfect 6-0 record this season. MacConnell's dominance on the mound was no surprise to head coach Jose Soto, who said the 1.45 ERA pitcher has been the team's most reliable starter. 'He’s pitched in most of our big games, and he’s won them all,' Soto said. The coach gave MacConnell the ball for the championship game a week in advance, confident in his preparation. 'He knew the plan,' Soto added. 'He’s been the most reliable.'
The junior said his success comes from trusting his preparation. 'There is some pressure, but the pressure definitely goes away when you realize all the work you’re putting behind each thing,' MacConnell said. He recalled earlier games where he worried about balls being hit 'not even remotely close to them' but later realized his defense had made plays he didn’t see. 'I’m like, ‘Okay, didn’t know you guys could do that,’' he said.
MacConnell’s six-inning performance included three hits allowed, zero runs, and seven strikeouts. His teammates backed him with timely hitting, scoring six runs across the game. The Bulldogs’ defense made three key plays to preserve the shutout, including a diving catch by shortstop Ethan Ramirez in the third inning. 'It’s all about the team,' MacConnell said. 'I’m only as good as the seven guys behind me.'
The win advances Melbourne to the regional semifinals, where they will face the winner of the 6A District 8 championship on May 1. MacConnell, who has not lost a start this season, said he approaches big games as opportunities rather than pressure situations. 'I knew I had the start a week before,' he said. 'That’s why I’m confident.'
