Over 50 firefighters attended, including those from the city’s five fire stations. Fire Chief Mark Thompson said the event was a chance to celebrate the department’s commitment to public safety. 'These firefighters put their lives on the line every day,' he said. 'This ceremony is about recognizing their hard work and the trust the community places in them.' Promotions included several firefighters moving to lieutenant and captain ranks, while others received certificates for years of service.
The event also featured a moment of silence for fallen firefighters, including Michael Rivera, who died in the line of duty in 2018. City officials emphasized the importance of the fire department’s role in protecting Brevard County’s residents. 'We’re here because of the people who came before us,' said Councilwoman Lisa Martinez. 'This is their legacy.'
Attendees included local officials, first responders, and members of the public. The ceremony concluded with a presentation of colors and a performance by the Melbourne Police Department’s Honor Guard. Firefighters who received commendations included Staff Sergeant James Carter, recognized for rescuing three residents during a house fire in February, and Captain Maria Lopez, honored for her leadership during a multi-agency training exercise.
The city plans to host similar events annually, with future ceremonies expected to include more community members and expanded recognition for junior firefighters. 'This is just the beginning,' Thompson said. 'We want to ensure every firefighter feels valued.'
