The Melbourne Community Orchestra will host free concerts on June 10 and 11 at the Melbourne Auditorium to celebrate America’s 250th birthday. The event, titled 'Coming Home: A Musical Tribute to America,' will feature works by all-American composers, including two women. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. each night with a fife and drum pre-show at the Melbourne Auditorium, located at 625 Hibiscus Blvd.
The program includes Joan Tower’s 13-minute piece 'Made in America,' which reimagines 'America the Beautiful' through dramatic shifts in tone and harmony. Tower’s composition explores themes of freedom and the fragility of the American ideal. The orchestra will also perform the first movement of Jennifer Higdon’s 'City Scape,' blending urban energy with moments of natural calm.
Noel Barefield, the orchestra’s manager and principal flute player, said the program highlights American composers. 'We are playing all-American composers, and two of the pieces are by female composers: Jennifer Higdon and Joan Tower,' Barefield said. The concerts follow the 'Star-Spangled Banner' with a focus on works that reflect the nation’s cultural and historical identity.
The fife and drum pre-show, featuring performers in period costume, sets the tone for the evening. The event is part of broader celebrations across the country as the U.S. marks its 250th anniversary. The orchestra’s performances are free and open to the public, with no ticket required.
