The game was part of a packed playoff bracket featuring 16 teams, with the winner advancing to the second round. Master's Academy, which entered the game with a 19-7 record, scored early and often, capitalizing on defensive errors by Merritt Island Christian, which had a 12-2 record coming into the matchup.
Merritt Island Christian, a perennial contender in the Space Coast's 1A division, struggled to contain Master's Academy's offense. The Cougars, led by pitcher Sarah Nguyen, allowed seven runs in the first three innings. Merritt Island's lone win in the tournament came earlier in the season against Bayside, but the team has lost three of its last four games, including an 11-0 loss to Master's Academy in March.
Master's Academy coach Mark Thompson said after the game that his team's focus on fundamentals paid off. 'We executed our game plan,' he said. 'Our defense held up, and our hitters stayed patient.' The win improves Master's Academy's playoff record to 3-0, while Merritt Island Christian falls to 2-1 in the bracket.
The 2026 FHSAA 1A Softball State Championship continues May 7, with Master's Academy set to face Schoolhouse Prep at 4 p.m. at Vero Beach High School. Merritt Island Christian has no games scheduled for the remainder of the tournament.
