Marietta College's softball team will play their first game of the 2026 season on March 21 at their newly renovated field, facing Otterbein in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. The Pioneers wrapped up their spring break tournament in Florida with an 8-4 record, though they fell short of last year's 10-0 performance at the Space Coast Spring Games. Senior pitcher Aiyana Hancock started the team's opening game against the University of Wisconsin-Superior, a matchup that hadn't occurred since 1995 when Marietta lost 4-3. This year's game was a 2-0 loss for the Pioneers, with the only runs coming in the fourth inning after three hits and a walk by UWS.
The team struggled in their second game, losing 8-3 to Rensselaer Polytechnic. But they bounced back the next day with an 8-6 win over Monmouth College, fueled by a sixth-inning comeback after two errors. The Pioneers' momentum faltered later in the tournament when Nebraska Wesleyan's three-run home run in the fourth inning led to a 5-1 loss. Addison Heath, who had an RBI double in the following game, helped Marietta take a 4-0 lead against Lakeland University but couldn't hold it as the Muskies scored five runs in the third inning.
The Pioneers finished the tournament with a 8-4 record, marking a slight improvement from their 20-15-1 overall record last season. However, they still failed to qualify for the OAC playoffs, finishing 6-10 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The team's performance in Florida came ahead of their home opener on their newly renovated field, which has been upgraded with new fencing, lighting, and seating.
The March 21 game will be the first since the renovations, which cost approximately $1.2 million and were funded by a combination of alumni donations and college funds. The field has been a work in progress since last fall, with construction crews working through the winter months. Fans are encouraged to attend the doubleheader against Otterbein, which will be the first of several home games this season. The Pioneers will continue their 2026 campaign with a series against the University of Mount Union next week.
