Brevard County commissioners have officially named March 21 as Space Coast Day, creating a new annual observance to recognize the region’s contributions to spaceflight and science. The designation was announced in a ceremony on January 13 at the Brevard County Commission office, where officials unveiled a proclamation celebrating the area’s legacy in aerospace innovation. The event included a countdown sequence, mirroring the launch traditions that have defined the Space Coast for decades. Commissioners said the holiday aims to honor the community’s role in every major milestone of American space exploration since the 1950s. The proclamation comes as the county prepares for its annual Hot Air Balloon Festival in Viera, which runs through Saturday. Officials emphasized that Space Coast Day will be marked each year with events at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and other local landmarks. County Commissioner Jeff Dufour, who pushed for the designation, said the holiday will highlight Brevard’s unique position as the birthplace of the U.S. space program. 'This isn’t just about rockets and satellites,' Dufour said during the ceremony. 'It’s about the people who made it happen — from engineers to teachers to families who raised generations of aerospace workers.' The new holiday follows a 2025 resolution by the county to formalize Space Coast Day, which was initially proposed by local historians and educators. The first official celebration is planned for March 21, 2027, with events including a parade in Cocoa and a star-gazing night at the Brevard Planetarium. Residents and visitors are invited to participate in the annual observance, which will feature exhibits at the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and educational programs at the Space Coast Discovery Center. The county has not yet announced specific events for 2026 but said details will be released in early 2026.
