Brevard County officials announced Monday that the county is set to receive $150 million in infrastructure funding from the state of Florida. The money will be used for road improvements, airport upgrades, and broadband expansion across the Space Coast. The announcement came during a press conference at the Brevard County Administration Building in Palm Bay. County Commissioner Randy Hunter said the funding will help address long-standing transportation challenges. 'This is a major step forward for our community,' Hunter said. 'We've been waiting years for this kind of investment.' The funds will specifically target the Titusville-Cocoa corridor, which handles over 200,000 vehicles daily. Engineers are already working on designs for new lanes on State Road 520. The money also includes $25 million for improvements at the Space Coast Regional Airport, including a new terminal and expanded parking. A separate $10 million portion will go to expanding high-speed internet access to rural areas of the county. The projects are expected to create over 1,000 construction jobs and take about 18 months to complete. The funding was approved as part of the state's 2024 transportation budget. Local business leaders praised the move. 'This will make Brevard more competitive for aerospace companies and tourists alike,' said Maria Lopez, president of the Brevard Chamber of Commerce. The first phase of road work is set to begin in early 2025.
