A morning run at Bonsteel Beach Park turned into a wildlife rescue when Sage Lajoie spotted a nesting sea turtle trapped beneath a wooden beach crossover. The 34-year-old runner called the Sea Turtle Preservation Society, and volunteers arrived within minutes to free the animal. The turtle was later released safely into the ocean. Lajoie, who lives near the park, said she checks beach crossovers regularly after a similar incident last year ended in the death of another turtle. "I felt like it was my responsibility to find her," she said, referring to the turtle she discovered too late last year. "This one, I wasn’t going to let it happen again." Communications Director Joel Cohen of the Sea Turtle Preservation Society said Lajoie’s quick action likely saved the turtle’s life. "It’s very heartwarming to see residents paying attention," he said. The society has documented multiple cases of sea turtles becoming trapped under beach crossovers in Brevard County. Cohen urged beachgoers to inspect crossovers during nesting season, which runs from March to October. "You go down to the beach in the morning, look under the crossovers," he said. "It takes just a few seconds." Lajoie said the experience was emotional. "I still think about the turtle that died last year," she said. "This one, I was able to help." The Sea Turtle Preservation Society is working with local officials to explore modifications to beach crossovers, such as adding cutouts or removing unnecessary structures, to reduce entrapment risks. The rescue highlights the delicate balance between human activity and wildlife conservation on Brevard’s beaches.
