Mental health experts in Brevard County say it's normal for parents to feel overwhelmed and exhausted. Angelica Washington, a licensed mental health counselor based in Titusville, told Florida Today that parents don't need to enjoy every moment of raising children and should model healthy boundaries. "We do not want to set our children up with unrealistic expectations," Washington said. "It's important for children to see that their parents have their own needs and identities." May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and local experts are reminding parents that they're not alone in feeling burnt out. Between work, school pickups, bills, and the pressure to cherish every moment, many parents struggle with guilt and emotional exhaustion. "Overwhelmed parenting has become incredibly common," Washington said. "The healthiest thing parents can do is let go of the impossible expectation that they must do it all perfectly." A structured but simple summer is often better for reducing stress than trying to create a perfect one, experts say. Washington added that parents should prioritize their own well-being and seek support when needed. "Mental health support doesn’t have to be complicated," she said. "Sometimes, just talking to someone can make a big difference." Local counselors are encouraging parents to reach out for help, whether through therapy, support groups, or simply talking to a trusted friend. "You don’t have to carry this burden alone," Washington said. "It’s okay to ask for help."
