The City of Melbourne announced a lane closure on Hibiscus Boulevard beginning January 22. The closure affects the southbound lane between New Haven Avenue and University Boulevard. Drivers are advised to plan alternate routes during the work period. City officials confirmed the closure is part of a $2.3 million street improvement project funded by the 2022 capital budget. The project includes repaving, drainage upgrades, and sidewalk repairs.
The lane closure is expected to last through March 2024, according to a city press release. Traffic will be redirected onto the northbound lane, which remains open for two-way traffic during work hours. Local businesses along the corridor have been notified, and some adjustments to parking will occur. The city has installed temporary signage and traffic cones to guide motorists.
Melbourne Public Works Director Maria Lopez said the project aims to reduce long-term maintenance costs. "This work is critical for safety and longevity," Lopez said in a statement. The city has also deployed flaggers at key intersections to assist with traffic flow. Residents can track project updates on the city’s website or by calling the public works hotline.
Construction hours are limited to 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The city has not yet announced plans for nighttime work. Emergency vehicles will have priority access throughout the closure period. Officials urged residents to stay informed and avoid the area during peak traffic times. The project is scheduled to be completed before the start of the 2024 school year.
