A 225-acre development called Landing at Space Coast is set to bring 77,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants, and shops to West Melbourne. The project, part of the Space Coast Town Center, aims to serve as a future downtown area for the region. West Melbourne City Manager Tim Rhode said the area, located on State Road 192 west of Interstate 95, has grown rapidly from a community of 10,000 people 25 years ago to 32,000 today. "We hope it brings in not only people from our community but from all over the Space Coast," Rhode said.
The site, once farmland, is now a hub of development as West Melbourne experiences population growth. Developers Barron Collier Investment Partners say the location is ideal for attracting workers in aerospace, defense, and tech industries. Edgar Jones, the Space Coast Town Center developer, called the area "a great location" due to its strong employment base and skilled workforce. The project is expected to create hundreds of jobs, though specific numbers have not been announced.
The development will include public art that highlights the Space Coast's heritage and exploration history. A grocery store anchor for the district has not yet been named but will be announced later. The area is positioned to become a central gathering place, with officials emphasizing its potential to draw visitors from across Brevard County. "The employment base here is phenomenal, the quality of the employees is phenomenal as well, so this is a great location," Jones said.
The project is part of a larger effort to reshape West Melbourne, which has seen a surge in population and economic activity. With no existing downtown area in the region, Landing at Space Coast could fill that gap. The development is expected to open in phases, though a timeline has not been released. Local leaders say the project reflects the area's growth and its appeal to a diverse range of industries and residents.
