Merritt Island, meanwhile, improved to 22-5 and advanced to the next round of postseason play.
Lake Wales, the No. 10 seed in the region, struggled to generate offensive opportunities against the No. 2 seed Mustangs. Merritt Island dominated possession early, scoring two first-half goals to take control of the match. The Highlanders managed to cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second half but were unable to mount a sustained comeback. Merritt Island added three more goals in the final 20 minutes to seal the win.
The loss ends Lake Wales' season after a competitive campaign that included multiple upsets in regular-season play. Coach John Martinez said the team fought hard but was outmatched by Merritt Island's depth and experience. "We gave it everything we had," Martinez said. "Merritt Island is a top-tier program, and they executed better when it mattered most."
Merritt Island's victory sets up a rematch with Lake Wales in the regional semifinals if the Mustangs continue their playoff run. The team, which has won four straight games entering the playoffs, will face the winner of the Lake Nona vs. Satellite matchup next week. The Mustangs' coach, Mark Thompson, credited his team's preparation for the postseason. "We focused on defense and transition play all season," Thompson said. "It paid off tonight."
The game drew a crowd of over 200 fans, many of whom were Lake Wales students and families. The Highlanders' season concludes with a 10-9-4 record, marking their first appearance in the playoffs since 2018.
