Two Juneteenth events are scheduled in Brevard County this weekend, offering opportunities for residents to engage with history and support local initiatives. The 'Joy is Resistance' Juneteenth celebration in Melbourne will take place on June 19 at Onyx Gifts & Books, located at 827 E. Strawbridge Ave. The event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and includes a floral selfie spot, live jazz music by Kristen Warren, and snacks. Admission is free. Organizers say the event will also support the Little Black Book Drive, a program aimed at providing children’s books by Black authors to local classrooms and homes.
On June 20, the City of Cocoa will host a Juneteenth arts and cultural celebration at Riverfront Park, 401 River Edge Blvd., from 2 to 7 p.m. The event will feature live entertainment, food trucks, a kids zone, arts and crafts, and vendor booths. Free admission is available. A separate book distribution by the Little Black Book Drive will occur from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Cocoa Civic Center, 430 Delannoy Ave. The initiative, which is nonpartisan, focuses on giving children access to books about Black history, STEM, and fiction.
The Little Black Book Drive has been a recurring part of Juneteenth events in Brevard. Last year, organizers distributed over 5,000 books at similar gatherings. This year’s goal is to expand reach by partnering with more local schools and libraries. 'We want to make sure every child has the chance to see themselves in stories,' said a spokesperson for the program.
Event organizers note that details may change, and attendees are encouraged to confirm schedules with the hosting organizations. Both events are open to the public, with no cost for participation. The celebrations aim to honor Juneteenth’s historical significance while fostering community connections through education and cultural activities.
