State Rep. Jeff Jenkins has shifted his campaign focus to challenge Tom Haridopolos for the Florida House seat representing Brevard County's 12th District. The move comes as Jenkins exits his previous race in the 11th District, where he had run unopposed in 2022. Haridopolos, a three-term Republican, has represented the 12th District since 2016. Jenkins announced the switch during a press conference at the Cocoa Village Center on Monday. 'This district needs fresh leadership,' Jenkins said. 'I've spent years working in the 11th District, but the issues in the 12th are urgent.' The 12th District includes parts of Titusville, Palm Bay, and the Kennedy Space Center. Haridopolos has not yet commented on the challenge. Jenkins, who previously served as a county commissioner, has focused his campaign on education funding and infrastructure. The race is expected to draw significant attention in a district that flipped to Republican in 2022 after years of Democratic control. Early voting begins October 15. Jenkins' campaign team declined to comment on fundraising figures. The 12th District has a population of approximately 220,000 residents, according to 2023 estimates. This marks the first major primary challenge Haridopolos has faced since 2018. Jenkins' decision follows months of meetings with local stakeholders in the 12th District. 'We've heard from teachers, parents, and workers who are frustrated with the status quo,' Jenkins said. The race could become a key indicator of political shifts in Brevard County ahead of the 2024 elections.
