Residents along the East Coast woke to an unusual sight Tuesday morning as a jellyfish-shaped cloud drifted across the sky. The phenomenon appeared around 5:45 a.m. and dissipated by 6:15 a.m., according to witnesses. It followed the 5:33 a.m. launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The rocket carried 29 Starlink satellites destined for low-Earth orbit.
The cloud, described as resembling a translucent jellyfish, was caused by the rocket’s exhaust interacting with atmospheric conditions. Similar occurrences have been documented after launches from the Space Coast, though they remain rare. No injuries or disruptions were reported.
The Falcon 9’s first stage successfully landed at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Landing Zone 1, marking the rocket’s return to flight after a two-year hiatus. SpaceX’s Starlink program aims to provide global broadband internet, with over 4,000 satellites already in orbit.
Local meteorologist Sarah Thompson said the cloud’s formation was likely due to the rocket’s plume freezing at high altitudes. “It’s a natural byproduct of the launch process,” she explained. “The specific conditions needed for it to look like a jellyfish are uncommon.”
