Over 200 people gathered at Kiwanis Park in Melbourne on May 1 for a 'May Day Strong' protest, one of many nationwide events tied to economic boycotts. The demonstration drew participants from across Brevard County, with speakers addressing issues including labor rights and immigrant protections. Organizers said the event aimed to highlight local and national economic struggles.
Representatives from the Airline Pilots Association (AFL-CIO), the Space Coast Immigrant Rights Alliance, and the Space Coast Democratic Socialists of America (SCDSA) spoke during the protest. Dan McDow introduced Tina Jensen, who performed the National Anthem before the main speeches began. Jensen, a local musician, said she volunteered to participate after receiving messages from event organizers.
The protest included signs advocating for higher wages, unionization, and immigration reform. Some attendees wore masks and face coverings, a precaution amid ongoing health concerns. A small group of counter-protesters stood near the park’s entrance but did not engage directly with the main gathering.
Local organizers estimated attendance at around 200 people, though some attendees said the crowd was larger. The event followed similar May Day demonstrations in cities like Orlando and Tampa, where participants also focused on economic inequality. No arrests were reported, and police said the protest remained peaceful throughout the evening.
The Space Coast Democratic Socialists of America chapter said the event was part of a broader push to raise awareness about workers’ rights. 'This is about real issues affecting people here,' said one organizer, who declined to give their name. 'We’re not just talking about national policies — we’re talking about how they impact our community.'
