Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy's varsity softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to Cocoa Beach on February 19 at a local field, marking their second straight loss in conference play. The game, played in Cocoa Beach, saw the Minutemen dominate from the start, with no runs scored by the Tigers in seven innings. Holy Trinity, which entered the game with a 10-12 overall record, fell to 10-13 on the season after the setback. Cocoa Beach improved to 20-7 overall with the win.
The loss came despite Holy Trinity's efforts to keep the game close early. However, Cocoa Beach's pitching and defense proved too strong, holding the Tigers to just two hits and no walks. The Minutemen's offense, meanwhile, capitalized on key hits in the first and third innings to build an insurmountable lead. Holy Trinity's starting pitcher, freshman Sarah Mitchell, was charged with the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits in five innings of work.
This is the second consecutive loss for Holy Trinity in conference play, following a 5-3 defeat to Rockledge earlier in the week. The Tigers, who are currently in a tight battle for a playoff spot, now face a critical stretch of their schedule with games against West Palm Beach and Satellite Beach upcoming. Head coach Mark Thompson said after the game that his team needs to focus on fundamentals to avoid similar struggles.
Cocoa Beach, which has been a consistent contender in the conference, used the win to solidify its position near the top of the standings. The Minutemen's offense, led by senior hitter Emily Rodriguez, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, continues to be a threat. With the win, Cocoa Beach remains undefeated in conference play this season.
