Hockey Heroes for the Homeless raised over $40,000 for Genesis House in Melbourne by the final buzzer of its three-day event February 20-22. The fundraiser featured hockey games, golf outings, and community events aimed at supporting homeless women and children in the area. The event drew athletes, celebrities, business leaders, and local residents to Viera, where four teams competed: Viera, Capital Trusses, Stantec, and W+J Construction. A highlight was a game between the NHL Celebrity Alumni and the Florida Power and Light All Stars, which drew large crowds and showcased talent from past and present players. Doug Flutie participated in the event, skating with Team Viera. The weekend also included dinners, a hot stove panel, and a watch party for the Men’s Olympic Gold Medal game, offering multiple opportunities for supporters to contribute. Genesis House, located in Melbourne, provides shelter and services for homeless individuals. The funds raised will directly benefit the organization’s programs. The event’s organizer, Todd Pokrywa, said the community’s support was crucial to exceeding the fundraising goal. The success of Hockey Heroes for the Homeless follows similar initiatives in Brevard County, where local groups have increasingly focused on addressing homelessness through sports and community engagement. The next event is planned for next year, with organizers aiming to expand outreach efforts. Local businesses and sponsors contributed to the event, including Capital Trusses and Stantec, which partnered with the organizers to support the cause. The fundraiser’s impact will be measured in the coming months as Genesis House uses the funds to expand its services. Volunteers and participants praised the event’s ability to bring the community together for a shared purpose.
