The program uses specialized imaging to detect subtle changes in heart muscle tissue that may not show up on standard scans. This allows doctors to identify issues like scarring or inflammation before symptoms appear, potentially altering patient outcomes.
The process works in real time. As patients lie in the MRI scanner, cardiologists review their images immediately, working alongside the MRI team to assess heart function. This approach helps diagnose complex or unclear heart conditions more accurately. A heart/myocardial map generated during the scan shows how different parts of the heart behave, providing data on tissue health that guides treatment decisions.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., and early detection is critical. At Holmes Regional, the program has already helped patients with conditions that were previously hard to diagnose. One patient, who had unexplained chest pain, was found to have early signs of heart failure through the MRI, allowing for timely intervention.
The program is part of Health First’s broader efforts to improve cardiac care in Brevard. It operates at Holmes Regional Medical Center, with plans to expand access to other Health First facilities. For now, the service is available to patients in Brevard and neighboring counties, with no wait times reported for appointments.
