NorthStar Children’s Grief Program will host its annual 'Picnic with Ponies' event on Saturday, June 6, at Hidden Acres Rescue for Thoroughbreds in Cocoa. The free gathering aims to help children and families coping with loss connect through activities like pony rides, story time, and memorial crafts. The event is a partnership between NorthStar and the horse rescue organization, which provides a safe space for grieving children to process their emotions.
Nicolle Conley, director of NorthStar’s grief program, said the day will include horse grooming experiences, barnyard games, and a BBQ lunch. More than 50 families have already registered for the event, which takes place at Hidden Acres Rescue for Thoroughbreds, a nonprofit in Cocoa that rehabilitates retired racehorses. 'This is about creating a community where people feel understood,' Conley said. 'Grief doesn’t always look the same, but here, kids can see others who are going through similar struggles.'
NorthStar offers free, year-round support for children ages 4 to 18 and their families dealing with the loss of a loved one. Services include individual counseling, family bereavement sessions, and peer support groups. Conley noted many families are unaware these resources exist. 'We want to break the stigma around grief,' she said. 'Sometimes, kids don’t know how to talk about their feelings, but animals can help them open up.'
The event will also feature talks by horse trainers and opportunities for families to create memorial crafts. NorthStar’s program operates out of St. Francis Hospice in Brevard County and serves hundreds of children annually. Conley emphasized the importance of accessible grief support. 'We’re here to remind families they’re not alone,' she said. 'Whether it’s through a pony ride or a conversation, we hope this day brings some healing.'
