Governor Ron DeSantis announced Friday that Florida has surpassed 10,000 bonuses awarded to new law enforcement recruits through the Florida Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program. The initiative, launched in 2022, has distributed more than $50 million in total bonuses to officers statewide. The latest round of payments, totaling over $5 million, went to 744 officers across the state, including those stationed in Brevard County.
The program offers new recruits $5,000 after-tax bonuses, with eligibility based on years of service and department needs. DeSantis highlighted the milestone during an event in Naples, noting that many recruits have relocated from states where law enforcement faced budget cuts. 'We’re fortunate to have them here,' he said, adding that Floridians 'are grateful for their service every day.'
The program has faced some criticism over its funding and eligibility criteria. Critics argue that the bonuses could be better spent on community policing initiatives or officer training. However, supporters, including local law enforcement leaders, say the incentives help attract and retain personnel in high-demand areas like Brevard County, where agencies have struggled with staffing shortages.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey, who has previously praised the program, did not immediately comment on the latest milestone. His office referred to the initiative as a 'critical tool' for addressing recruitment challenges. The next round of bonus payments is expected to be announced in late spring, with applications open to officers hired through June 2026.
