The Federal Trade Commission has issued a warning to residents of Brevard County about scammers posing as employers offering fake jobs. These schemes, often promoted through text messages, social media, or email, promise flexible hours and high pay but are designed to steal personal information. The FTC says the scams frequently target people looking for extra income, especially during times of financial stress. "These offers sound too good to be true," said an FTC spokesperson. "They’re not."
Scammers typically contact victims unexpectedly with offers to reship packages, complete data entry, or perform other tasks from home. The messages often include urgent language, pressuring victims to act quickly. In reality, there is no legitimate job involved. Instead, the scammers collect sensitive details like bank account numbers or Social Security numbers. These stolen credentials can be used for identity theft or direct financial fraud.
Local consumer advocates have seen a rise in these scams in recent months. One Brevard resident, who asked not to be named, said they received a message offering $20 an hour for "easy work from home." After sharing their bank details, they discovered their account had been drained. "It happened in minutes," the resident said. "I didn’t even get a job."
The FTC advises job seekers to verify any opportunity through official channels. This includes checking the employer’s website, contacting the company directly, and avoiding sharing financial information until a legitimate offer is confirmed. "If it’s not a real company, it’s not a real job," said the FTC spokesperson. "Don’t fall for the pressure."
Authorities in Brevard County are working with federal agencies to track these scams. However, the FTC emphasizes that the best defense is awareness. "People need to know these tactics and avoid them," the spokesperson said. "The cost of falling for a scam is far higher than the promised pay."
