Four Brevard County high school softball teams advanced to the regional semifinals after the opening round of the FHSAA state playoffs concluded on May 7. The semifinals will take place Tuesday, May 12, with games starting at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted. Melbourne is the only Class 6A team remaining from the area, while Eau Gallie, Merritt Island, and Satellite qualified in Class 4A.
In Class 6A, Region 2, No. 3 Bloomingdale (19-8) faces No. 2 Melbourne (26-1) at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs and Bulls have not played this season after both teams won shutout games in the quarterfinals. Melbourne leads in offensive metrics, with a batting average 72 points higher than Bloomingdale and a better on-base-plus-slugging percentage (1.126 to .880). The pitching matchup will feature Melbourne’s freshman Addison Balavender (0.85 ERA) against Bloomingdale’s junior Lindsay Cable (1.25 ERA). The winner advances to Thursday’s regional final, where they will face No. 1 Bartow or No. 4 Durant.
In Class 4A, Region 2, No. 1 Eau Gallie (22-3) hosts No. 5 Merritt Island (11-14) at 6 p.m. The Commodores have dominated Merritt Island this season, winning 16-2 on Feb. 24 and 6-1 on April 14. Eau Gallie hit .353 against Merritt Island this year. Merritt Island’s offense, led by senior Elena Rollen (.451 batting average, 15 RBI), will look to counter Eau Gallie’s senior pitcher Jordan Stout, who struck out 17 in 11 1/3 innings against Merritt Island earlier this season.
Also in Class 4A, No. 6 Satellite (10-14) faces No. 2 Lake Wales (22-6). Satellite has a better batting average and on-base percentage than Lake Wales but enters as the underdog. The Scorpions will aim to replicate their upset win in the quarterfinals, where they advanced with strong offensive production.
