Former U.S. Congressman William "Bill" Joseph Posey died Saturday at 78. His successor in Florida’s 8th Congressional District, Rep. Mike Haridopolos, confirmed the death Sunday, calling Posey’s passing the end of a "remarkable career that spanned decades of leadership." Posey served as a Republican congressman from 2009 until his retirement in 2025, representing a district that includes much of Brevard County.
Posey first entered politics in 1992 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives, representing House District 32 until 2000. He later served in the Florida Senate, holding seats in Senate Districts 15 and 24 from 2000 to 2008. His career in state government laid the groundwork for his eventual move to Congress, where he focused on issues like space technology and education.
Born in Washington, D.C., in 1947, Posey’s family relocated to the Space Coast in 1956, during the early days of the U.S. space program. He grew up in Brevard County and worked for McDonnell Douglas, a major aerospace company, before entering politics. His deep ties to the region aligned with its rise as a hub for space innovation, and he often highlighted that connection in his legislative work.
Haridopolos praised Posey’s approach to public service, saying he "approached public office not as a path to personal recognition, but as a solemn responsibility to serve others." Posey’s legacy includes his work on the Florida Legislature’s education committees and his efforts to secure federal funding for Space Coast infrastructure. He is survived by his wife, two children, and several grandchildren.
The family has not yet announced plans for a memorial service. Haridopolos said Posey’s influence will remain in the policies he shaped and the communities he supported. "His legacy will endure through the countless lives he touched, the communities he strengthened, and the values he championed throughout his years of service," Haridopolos said.
