Florida Tech’s softball team secured a 3-1 win over Florida Southern on Thursday, February 26, behind a stellar performance by junior pitcher Sammy Murphy. The Panthers, who scored 26 runs in their previous game against Palm Beach Atlantic, shifted focus to pitching and defense, with Murphy leading the charge by striking out nine batters. The victory marks the team’s second win in the Sunshine State Conference this season.
Murphy, who tied her career-high in strikeouts for the second time this season, started strong, striking out the first batter and retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning. Her command of the strike zone kept Florida Southern’s offense off balance throughout the game, allowing the Panthers to maintain control. Florida Tech’s offense contributed with a single and stolen base in the bottom of the first, but the team relied on Murphy’s dominance to hold the lead.
The Panthers’ strategy of prioritizing pitching over run production paid off, as Murphy limited Florida Southern to just one run on five hits. Defensive plays, including a critical double play in the third inning, helped preserve the lead.
