A Florida black bear cub named Avocado has begun rehabilitation at Brevard Zoo following its discovery in Titusville. The cub was found in early March by a local resident near the Indian River, according to zoo officials. It was immediately taken to the Brevard Zoo’s Wildlife Hospital for treatment. Avocado is one of several black bears in the area that the zoo has rehabilitated in recent years. The cub is being cared for by a team of veterinarians and wildlife specialists. 'Our goal is to ensure Avocado gains the strength and skills needed to survive in the wild,' said Dr. Lisa Martinez, the zoo’s chief veterinarian. The cub was underweight and had a minor injury when it was brought in. Zoo staff are providing it with a diet of fruits, nuts, and specially formulated meals. Avocado is expected to stay in the hospital for several weeks before being released back into a protected area. The Brevard Zoo has rehabilitated over 200 animals since 2018, including multiple black bear cubs. The facility works closely with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission on rescue and release efforts. 'Every animal we take in is a chance to restore balance to the ecosystem,' Martinez said. Avocado’s rehabilitation is part of a broader effort to address the growing number of injured wildlife in Brevard County. The zoo reports a 15% increase in wildlife rescues compared to 2022.
