Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Melbourne Fire Department responded to a brush fire near Business Center Boulevard on Friday, Feb. 26, about a mile from Faith Fellowship Academy and Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. The fire broke out in an area with dry vegetation, prompting a multi-agency effort involving Brevard County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other local units. Assistant Chief Matthew Luisi of Brevard County Fire Rescue confirmed crews arrived within minutes of the initial call and worked to secure the perimeter before flames spread further.
The fire, which started around 3:45 p.m., burned through approximately 1.2 acres of brush and grass before being fully extinguished by late evening. No structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported. Firefighters used aerial support from a BCFR air attack helicopter to monitor the blaze, which officials said was contained by 8:15 p.m.
Residents in the nearby neighborhoods of Fairmont and Sun Lakes were advised to keep windows closed and avoid the area until crews completed their work. Local schools remained open, though administrators said they monitored air quality throughout the day.
Assistant Chief Luisi said the fire highlights the need for residents to clear dry vegetation from their properties, especially during the dry season. 'We’re seeing more fires this year due to prolonged drought conditions,' he said. 'Everyone has a role in prevention.'
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Brevard County Fire Rescue officials asked anyone with information to contact their tip line at 321-633-8400.
