Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staley confirmed Tuesday that human remains found in 2023 belong to Marilou Combs, a Palm Coast woman who vanished in August 2003. The identification ended a 22-year search for Combs’ family, who had no answers until divers discovered a car near her home last October. Sheriff Staley called the breakthrough a miracle during a news conference.
Combs disappeared after an argument with her mother, leaving her 13-year-old daughter, Natasha Harper, and two brothers without answers. Harper described the years of uncertainty as a constant void, with birthdays and holidays marked by unanswered questions. The family’s hope turned to relief in October when divers removed a car’s rear bumper, revealing a shock absorber and spring assembly buried in the water.
Private dive teams used sonar to locate the vehicle, which was found less than a mile from Combs’ former home. The FBI later recovered Combs’ remains, her driver’s license, and a plastic toy belonging to Harper. The toy, still colorful after two decades, became a tangible link to the past for the family. Harper said seeing it was the moment she felt closure.
The case had stalled for years until divers conducted multiple sonar sweeps of the area. With over 70,000 bodies of water in Florida, finding the car was likened to searching for a needle in a haystack. Sheriff Staley thanked the dive teams for their work, calling it a rare example of persistence paying off. The remains were confirmed through forensic analysis, though the cause of death remains under investigation.
